TOWARDS HEALTHY SOCIETIES

“We welcomed IPC as an opportunity for new ideas and vision for our local/Indian farmers, while they meet people from different parts of the world. This cross-cultural interaction surfaced common issues and stories that the world faces together seeking to find synergies that lead to solutions. Aranya’s work values traditional practices and our farmers, especially women, stand strong overcoming multiple challenges during the revitalization of these practices through a new school of thought that is permaculture. This unique opportunity brings together renowned practitioners from across oceans and borders, to create a network of people who bring forward and share their insightful journeys on a range of topics.”

Aranya Agricultural Alternatives hosted 13th International Permaculture Convergence in Telangana, India. An open to everyone two-day conference took place November 25-26, 2017, at Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, in Hyderabad. This conference included workshops, presentations, panel discussions, exhibitions, music and art that explored all dimensions of permaculture.

five-day residential convergence was then conducted from November 27 to December 2, 2017 at Polam farm, Sangareddy District, Telangana. This experiential learning forum where the programme emerges from the contributions of participants offered Permaculture Design Course certificate holders or people having experience in Permaculture the platform, to connect more deeply with each other and the theme and subthemes chosen for this new occasion.

During the Convergence, visits at Aranya Permaculture farm, a 20-year old Indian tropical dryland permaculture farm, was organised. The food forest and annual crop fields were established entirely rainfed. There are over 200 different species of trees. Recently solar system and pump has been established which has diversified even more some of the planting. It is a beautiful example of an established permaculture farm in India, designed by the co-founders of Aranya Agricultural Alternatives, Padma & Narsanna Koppula.

Permaculture is particularly relevant to the world today given our declining water resources, soil health, biodiversity and wildlife habitat. This is further accentuated by associated issues including increasing farmer impoverishment, climate change, and the loss of traditional agricultural practices.
Most experts agree on the fact that “crisis” through its various forms (economic, ecologic, societal) will continue to recur and the time to prepare our societies to become more resilient is now.

The International Permaculture Convergence is a biennial event where practitioners from around the world come together to connect and learn with others working in this rapidly growing field of sustainability.Over 100 + internationally renowned speakers from various walks of life like Dr. Vandana Shiva (India), Robyn Francis (Australia), Andy Goldring (the UK), Starhawk (USA), Tierra Martinez (Argentina) and more presented in IPC India 2017. Here is the complete list of speakers.
